Burnout Is Not Just a Personal Problem... It's a Systems Signal

Burnout isn’t just about overworked individuals, it’s often the symptom of deeper organizational misalignment. As an I-O psychologist, I’ve seen burnout emerge not from a lack of grit, but from:
Ø Misaligned values between employees and the organization
Ø Excessive cognitive load with unclear priorities
Ø Unspoken pressure to always be "on"
Ø Lack of autonomy, recognition, or psychological safety
When high-performing individuals start disengaging, missing deadlines, or going quiet, the response shouldn’t be “try harder” or “tough it out.” It should be:
o What are we reinforcing in our culture?
o Are our systems, structures, and leadership behaviors promoting sustainable performance?
o Are we designing work with human capacity in mind?
Burnout is not a personal failure, it’s a design flaw we can fix.
What signals of burnout have you seen in your workplace and how did your team respond? I’d love to hear your perspective.
